MS in Data Science Thesis - Roberto

Roberto Williams Batista successfully completed all the required coursework for his graduate program in data science, and defended his thesis on April 17th, 2020. The thesis defense was held using the Microsoft Teams platform due to social distancing practices adopted in Spring 2020 for COVID-19.

Dr. Sanchez-Arias supervised Roberto’s work in which he investigated the use of novel data mining and machine learning methods for healthcare data sources of multiple nature. Members of the thesis committee Dr. Centeno (DSBA) and Dr. Jaimes (CS) approved Roberto’s thesis work. Part of Roberto’s thesis work focused on machine learning techniques for length-of-stay prediction using electronic health records (EHR) with data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC III) database.
